Newcastle Disease in Layer Chicken

Newcastle condition (ND), also referred to as tetelo, is a condition that can result in significant financial losses in the production of layers. Avian pamyxoryrus serotype 1 (APMV-1) of the genus Paramyxovirus, family Paramyxoviridae, is the disease-causing agent.

Some of the symptoms that appear on the ND-infected layer; are decreased appetite, conjunctivitis, decreased appetite, conjunctivis, decreased egg production, respiratory disorders, digestive disorders, and torticollis. ND can also decrease or stalled egg production, and very high mortality rates. Other abnormalities can also be found in the eggs produced, in addition to the decreased amount of production, the quality of eggs of chickens infected with ND is usually pale, small, and defective in the shell.

ND is a rapidly contagious disease, with an incubation period of 2 – 15 days, so infected livestock must be separated immediately. ND can be prevented by maintaining the condition of chickens, giving vitamins and minerals to maintain immunity, carrying out regular vaccinations, and implementing good biosecurity management.

Vaccination can be effective if the antibody titer formed in poultry is still protective after vaccination.  Factors that affect the success of vaccination are the type of vaccine, vaccinator, route of administration of vaccine doses, and the environment. The strain compatibility between the vaccine and the virus in the field is also an important factor in order to create homologous immunity. In addition, the vaccination program provided must also follow the field conditions, to get the appropriate vaccination program please contact our technical team.
